HULT IC: Final reflection

Some of you have been here since September, and others only a few weeks, but we're all going to reflect on this class in a blog entry for our final project.

If you don't have gmail/blogger, (students who have been here since September already do!) here are the steps, and some advice:

1) Open a gmail account. (at http://gmail.com)  Use something recognizably you! Initials, first name, last name, something. Make it professional as well. You will use this to correspond with teachers, so please nothing silly or inappropriate!

2) When you open your gmail set your language to English! You'll be forced to get used to the English emailing terms, and spell check will make your emails easier to understand!

3) Name your blog. I recommend the url be easy to remember, related to you and your time in Atlanta. You will use this in other classes and other assignments!

4) Personalize your blog. Check out some great examples! http://blogsofnote.blogspot.com/

Students who have been here since September already have an entry on "My Biggest Challenge Learning English." The last entry will be a course reflection. Make sure you answer the following questions and including the following components:

Final reflection blog. Due 11/29 8:15 am. (Our last class will be spent checking out other students blogs!)

  • Think back to what we've done in this class (VARK learning styles, phonetic alphabet and pronunciation, history of the English language, note-taking, mind-mapping, dictionaries, libraries, research, reading techniques like skimming and scanning, giving speeches, multi-cultural learning...) What topic is the most useful for classes and projects next term?
  1. What topic is the most useful for AY projects next term?
  2. Which do you wish you'd learned before AY projects were due?
  3. What topic is the most useful for the TOEFL?
  4. What topic is the most useful for your overall experience at EF Atlanta?
  5. Is there a topic that wasn't useful or helpful for you? Why not?
  • Think about your AY Project on your famous person. You read a biography, and wrote about that person's ups and downs, your personal connection to the person, and ran their presidential campaign.
  1. Which project did you learn the most from?
  2. What kinds of projects would you like to see in the future?
  3. What kinds of readings would you like to do in the future? Would you prefer the whole class reading the same book? Why or why not?
  • SPIN classes at EF are "special interest" classes. This particular SPIN class was accredited by Hult University as part of their "Introduction to International Communication" course.
  1. What other topics would you like to see in a class about "International Communication"?
  2. In general, what did you like about this class? What didn't you like about it? Do you have any suggestions to make the class better in the future?
  3. What other "special interest" topics interest you for future SPIN classes?
Instructions: Write your blog entry including your responses to all the questions above. Please include an image: a photo, drawing, etc. as part of your reflection. Then comment on this post with a link to your blog!

B2-3 Unit 5: World English

Regional Dialects, etc:

Warm up Tuesday:
1. How countries have English as their official language?
2. Why did written English disappear for about 100 years starting in AD 1066?
3. What is a dialect? How many dialects are there in English?

My Fair Lady
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HDEAFRMjdU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAYUuspQ6BY

Higgins:
Look at her, a prisoner of the gutters,
Condemned by every syllable she utters.
By right she should be taken out and hung,
For the cold-blooded murder of the English tongue.

Eliza:
Aaoooww!

Higgins:
Aaoooww!
Heavens, what a noise!
This is what the British population,
Calls an elementary education.

Pickering:
Come, sir, I think you picked a poor example.

Higgins:
Did I?
Hear them down in Soho square,
Dropping "h's" everywhere.
Speaking English anyway they like.
You sir, did you go to school?

Man:
Wadaya tike me for, a fool?

Higgins:
No one taught him 'take' instead of 'tike'!

Hear a Yorkshireman, or worse,
Hear a Cornishman converse,
I'd rather hear a choir singing flat.
Chickens cackling in a barn,
Just like this one here.

Eliza:
Garn!

Higgins:
I ask you, sir, what sort of word is that?

It's "Aaoooww" and "Garn" that keep her in her place.
Not her wretched clothes and dirty face.

Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?
This verbal class distinction, by now,
Should be antique.
If you spoke as she does, sir,
Instead of the way you do,
Why, you might be selling flowers, too!

Pickering:
I beg your pardon!

Higgins: An Englishman's way of speaking absolutely classifies him.
The moment he talks he makes some other Englishman despise him.
One common language I'm afraid we'll never get,
Oh, why can't the English learn to
set a good example to people whose
English is painful to your ears?
The Scots and the Irish leave you close to tears.
There even are places where English completely disappears.

In America, they haven't used it for years!

Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?
Norwegians learn Norwegian,
the Greeks are taught their Greek.
In France every Frenchman knows his language from "A" to "Zed"
The French never care what they do, actually, as long as they pronounce it properly.

Arabians learn Arabian with the speed of summer lightning,
The Hebrews learn it backwards, which is absolutely frightening.
But use proper English and you're regarded as a freak.

Why can't the English,
Why can't the English,
Learn To Speak?

Please comment:
1) What is Henry Higgins' point?
2) Do you agree?
3) Is this true in your own language?

The Ups and Downs of JFK
John Fitzgerald Kennedy, one of the famous persons (people?) in the world, was elected for (the) 35th president for United States in 1961. He was the youngest president in the US history. During his term of office, He faced many difficult events, the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cuban Missile Crises, the building of the Berlin wall, and the African-American Civil Rights Movements. In these situations, he tried to support peace for world, racial integration, and civil right for minority. However, John Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in 1963. Despite his short period of presidency, He (he) achieved many things(other word?) in diverse fields, and many people still remember and talked about him (today?).

Good morning AY Project Students!

At this point all of you have your biography and should have begun reading. I hope it's going well so far!

Our first essay, which is due by midnight Sunday October 14th, is called "Ups and Downs."

You must focus on the achievements (ups) and challenges (downs) of your person.

Here is your format:
Introduction (1 paragraph):
Tell who your person is, why they're important, what they achieved.
Body (2-4 paragraphs):
In your body focus on the details of the ups and downs.
How did they become successful?
Did your person overcome the downs? How?
Conclusion (1 paragraph):
Overall, is your person better known for their achievements or their challenges?
What is the person's legacy?

Your essay should be 2 pages. It may not exceed 3 pages. Please double space and use size 12 font, Times New Roman.

At the end include a Works Cited in MLA format with the biography you read.

Your rough draft is due on Monday, October 8th at 5 pm. This will give Emily time to read it by Wednesday morning and give you feedback!

Please send your essay at a Word document, or a google doc to efatlanta@gmail.com.
